"Challenges in Editing When English is Not the Writers' Native Language" Presentation and Membership Meeting

In the first part of this quarterly membership meeting, SIG leaders will present news items related to the Technical Editing SIG. Then Melanie G. Flanders, STC Associate Fellow, will present a webinar entitled “Challenges in Editing When English is Not the Writers' Native Language.”

Presentation Description

In this webinar, Melanie G. Flanders, a technical editor working in Nanjing, China, will draw upon her strong technical editing and writing background as well as her understanding of the Chinese culture and Mandarin language to:
  • share her experience working with Chinese authors and translators.
  • address the challenges of working with writers where English is not their native language.
  • provide advice on editing material where key information is missing.

This SIG event will be open to Technical Editing SIG members and non-members.

Speaker Profile

Melanie G. Flanders, a longstanding STC member and STC Associate Fellow, has worked as a technical editor and writer for over 30 years in numerous industries, including computer and telecommunication, building construction, medical, banking, publishing, and education.

Prior to moving to Nanjing in April 2005, Melanie lived in Houston, Texas, for 15 years where she started her own documentation and training consulting company, KnowledgeMasters, Inc.

Melanie currently works for Sunyu Jiangsu Translation Company. She reviews documents to ensure that they have been localized properly for American audiences, provides training to help the translators improve their localization skills, and answers questions concerning grammar and nuances of the English language.

In addition to her editing responsibilities, Melanie has taught spoken English at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA) and done corporate training and seminars in business English and cross-cultural communication.
