Technical Editing SIG Group on the MySTC Network

The Technical Editing SIG is on the new MySTC social network! It is a great way to meet and connect with others. Our group on the MySTC network is open to anyone — even non-STC members.

MySTC

For background on the MySTC network, see this STC Notebook blog post(external link) or watch this demo:

On the MySTC network, you can "friend" other people, upload pictures and videos, and join discussions. Here's a live snapshot of what's happening in the Technical Editing SIG group on the MySTC network right now:

  • Screen Capture software
What do you folks use? I've been using a free google app for web-based captures, but I'd like a bit better tool and I need one that I can take screen shots of off-line programs such as MS Word. Anybody use a good one?I also use SnagIt and it works OK, but I thought I'd ask around. Thanks and sorry for x-post. I may ask this elsewhere.
  • Editing for Information Accessibility ("Mind the Gap"):2011 Presentation and Technical Editing SIG Membership Meeting
Thanks again to Virginia Danzig for a wonderful presentation at the Oct 11 meeting of the Technical Editing SIG. The recording of the meeting will be available for download or streaming in a few days. See http://www.stc-techedit.org/Editing+for+Accessibility for more information. If you attended, please don't forget to complete the evaluation survey: http://www.stc-techedit.org/survey13
  • Technical Editing Fundamentals - STC course
Hello - I was wondering if anyone in this group has taken the STC online course "Technical Editing Fundamentals" and if so what you thought of it. Some questions: - Did it cover what you expected? - Would you recommend it? - Any pros/cons Thanks!
  • Second Opinion on Dangling Modifiers
Here's the sentence: This feature allows an application to communicate with RWS without a password, using a token and an application ID. So is "using" a dangling modifier? Any feedback, with references, are appreciated. I am purposely not including any additional information about the sentence so I do not bias any answers.
  • What's the value of a Technical Editor?
Not all companies understand why it's important for them to have technical editor(s). In fact, many technical editors must justify their existence on a regular basis. If you have some information that would help others understand the value-add, please share it on this page. The page is a wiki that anyone can edit!

  • REMINDER: Technical Editing SIG GLOBAL watercooler chat -- Working in Cross-Cultural Environments
Do you work in a cross-cultural environment? Are you interested in hearing how one team does this successfully across continents, timezones, and cultures? Then join us Thursday, May 3, 11 am-12 pm EST for this global watercooler chat. Geography, timezones, cultural differences, and other challenges notwithstanding, Bob Raymond, editor at Oracle (in California, U.S.), and Manoj Bokil, Information Development manager at Oracle (in India), have been working together in a collaborative model for over 4 years—and the collaboration has been very productive, effective, and satisfying for both Bob and the India InfoDev team. This watercooler chat will talk a bit about how Bob and Manoj managed to achieve this effective and mutually rewarding collaboration. For more information, go to http://www.stc-techedit.org/Watercooler+Chat+-+Working+in+Cross-Cultural+Environments
  • Editing Evaluation Workshop at Summit: Entries Due May 4
