Verifying editorial changes using Microsoft Word2007 review features

If you suspect that a document has been changed silently, you can check
on it by using the Word compare documents feature. That way you could
find the most frequent offenders and spend some time educating them
about why the process is in place.
If the document is long, this could be tedious -- but if you only have
to do it a few times, it could be worth it.

Subject: Re: [Stctesig-l] Verifying editorial changes using Microsoft
Word2007 review features

Hi Jim - thanks for your email. We do use a version control system
(SVN/Subversion) - I should have mentioned that in my email.

The issue with silently accepting track-change edits is that our process
calls for verification that the edit was either made or negotiated.
Once the author accepts the changes, the tracking disappears. And
you're right that silently rejecting track changes (or deleting remarks)
is a bigger problem - one that we can probably only address through
policy rather than technology.

Thanks for the best practice of keeping track changes on through all
iterations. I know for a fact that it's not currently being done, but
as manager, I can set a policy for that to happen.

Really helpful reply. Thanks!

Verifying editorial changes using Microsoft Word 2007 review features

I have been working with my team to build a workflow/process that allows
editors to make markups in Microsoft Word 2007 (using track changes and
comments), pass it back to the document author, and then verify that the
changes have been implemented. Sometimes this involves several
iterations.

Some of the issues we found were:

- Authors would accept track changes, and thus, the original
markup would no longer exist to verify or reference.

- Comments would be deleted without changes being made.

- Authors would make additional changes to the document without
notifying reviewers/editors or using track changes.

- Multiple reviewers or iterations would cause track change or
comment "clutter" onscreen

Are there tools or best practices that could help us with these issues
so that we can implement an electronic workflow?

I believe at last year's conference, attendees were able to register on
Sunday so the 7:30 registration on the first official day of the

Maybe it's wishful thinking. Does anyone know if registration will be

If you're attending the STC Summit this month, we'd love to meet with
you!

Let's get the conference started off right by meeting for breakfast at
the
hotel's restaurant, o'h American Grill, on Monday, May 21, at 6 AM.
Yeah,
it's early (!). But, this way, we'll have plenty of time to chat before
registration opens at 7:30.

Reservations are not mandatory, but they are appreciated (so that we can
let the restaurant know how many people we're expecting). Please RSVP in
one of the following ways:

* Respond to this email by Sunday, May 20, at 5 PM CT (UTC-5 hours)
* Send a tweet or direct message to @virtual_li or @stc_te_sig by
Sunday,
May 20, at 5 PM CT (UTC-5 hours)

Rick Sapir and I will see you there!

Inquiring Editor Article for the Summit

Hello,

This year at the Summit, we're going to try an "Inquiring Editor" article for our newsletter. If you have time during the Summit, could you please interview TE SIG members using the following questions below? Two or three interviews would be great.

We would want the attendees’ OK. Do we want to include personal info? We can gauge what the respondee feels conformable with: First name only? Their field? How many Summits they have attended? Years as a TE Sig member?

Technical Communication Questions
1. Did you learn something new about technical editing and/or the technical communication field as a result of the Summit? If yes, what was it? How do you plan to use your new skill or learning?

2. Did you see any trends in technical editing and/or the technical communication profession? If, yes what was it? What do you think the impact will be to the profession?

Personal Questions
3. “Overheard at the Summit”: What was the most interesting comment you heard at the Summit?

4. What was a personal Summit special memory or highlight for you? Why?

Thank you. Regards,
Ann Marie

REMINDER: GLOBAL watercooler chat tomorrow -- Working in Cross-Cultural Environments

Do you work in a cross-cultural environment? Are you interested in hearing
how one team does this successfully across continents, timezones, and
cultures? Then join us Thursday, May 3, 11 am-12 pm EDT for this global
watercooler chat.

Geography, timezones, cultural differences, and other challenges
notwithstanding, Bob Raymond, editor at Oracle (in California, U.S.), and
Manoj Bokil, Information Development manager at Oracle (in India), have
been working together in a collaborative model for over 4 years—and the
collaboration has been very productive, effective, and satisfying for both
Bob and the India InfoDev team. This watercooler chat will talk a bit
about how Bob and Manoj managed to achieve this effective and mutually
rewarding collaboration.
